Edward ML Peters to Present at INFORMS 2010

Topic Covers ‘Concept Mining and Discovery in Clinical Pathways’

DALLAS, Texas October 18, 2010 - OpenConnect today announced that Edward M.L. Peters will present a paper entitled ‘Concept Mining and Discovery in Clinical Pathways’ at the DM-HI Workshop at the INFORMS Annual Meeting in Austin, Texas. Energizing the Future will be held from November 7-10 at the Austin Convention Center.

Edward M.L. Peters, CEO of OpenConnect, is co-author of the paper. The research was conducted under the OpenConnect Research Chair with Katholieke Universiteit Leuven (K.U.Leuven) in Belgium.

“It is truly an honor to present Concept Mining and Discovery in Clinical Pathways written with my esteemed colleagues at K.U. Leuven for the INFORMS Annual Meeting,” said Edward M.L. Peters, the CEO of OpenConnect. “Our topic, Concept Discovery and Mining, is the combination of data and process discovery techniques, which advance mainstream data mining concepts. This new idea, when used in clinical applications, has delivered significant understanding of clinical pathway improvement.”

Discovery starts from data mining clinical reports and patient result server records, in terms of attributes (such as time, cost, key performance indicators, but also keywords) as well as events and activities. Concept discovery addresses process variations and exceptional cases, which are very relevant for integrated care pathways. The techniques are explained by means of a case study on breast-cancer patients. The effects of time of stay optimization on the complexity of the various resulting pathways are discovered in detail.
